FSSAI licenses are typically valid for a 1- to 5-year period, and renewal is essential to continue operations legally. This article will look at the FSSAI License Renewal Process in detail.

IndiaFilings facilitates this FSSAI renewal process, providing expert guidance and support to simplify the complexities of FSSAI license renewal for businesses in the food industry.

FSSAI Food Business Licence

For any food business engaged in manufacturing, storing, transporting, or distributing food in India, acquiring an FSSAI License or FSSAI Registration is mandatory. The requirement varies based on the company’s size and nature. During the FSSAI Registration procedure, the Food Business Operator (FBO) receives a 14-digit number, which must be printed on food packages. Validity of FSSAI License/Registration

The FSSAI License/Registration is granted for a chosen duration of 1 to 5 years, starting from the issuance date. Food Business Operators (FBOs) must initiate the FSSAI license renewal process at least 30 days before their license expiration or registration.

FSSAI License Renewal

As stated earlier, the FSSAI license is initially issued with a validity of 1 year, with the flexibility to extend it for up to 5 years. Renewal of the FSSAI license is essential upon its expiration. To ensure uninterrupted business operations, initiating the renewal process before the expiry date of the FSSAI license validity is mandatory.

Renewing your FSSAI license offers essential benefits for your food business:

Prescribed Date for FSSAI Renewal

The Food Safety Standard (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations of 201 specify that the prescribed date for FSSAI Renewal is up to 30 days before the expiration date mentioned in the permit. Food Business Operators (FBOs) can initiate the renewal process as early as 180 days before the expiry date, providing a substantial window for filing their renewal applications.

Late fee for Non-Renewal of FSSAI License

If the FSSAI registration renewal application is not filed at least 30 days before the expiry date, Food Business Operators (FBOs) must pay a late fee of Rs. 100 per day in addition to the regular renewal fee. It’s important to note that this late fee is specifically associated with license renewal and is not applicable in the case of registration. It incentivises FBOs to ensure the timely renewal of their licenses to avoid additional costs.

Renewal of FSSAI license after expiry date

If the renewal of an FSSAI license is not filed at least 30 days before the expiry date, Food Business Operators (FBOs) must pay a late fee of Rs. 100 per day, in addition to the regular renewal fee. It’s important to note that this late fee is specifically associated with the renewal of licenses and is not applicable in the case of registration. It incentivises FBOs to ensure the timely renewal of their licenses to avoid additional costs.

Under the new policy for renewing the FSSAI License/Registration after the expiry date, Food Business Operators (FBOs) can continue with the same license number. However, there are penalties associated with late renewal:

  • 1st day to 90th day from the original expiry date: Three times the existing annual license/registration fee.
  • 91st day to 180th day from the original expiry date: An additional two times the existing annual license/registration fee, making it five times the regular fee.

This policy encourages FBOs to renew their FSSAI License/Registration promptly, providing a grace period with increasing penalties for late renewals.

For the renewal of an FSSAI license, the following documents are generally required:

  • FSMS Certificate: A certificate related to the Food Safety Management System.
