Step 1: Visit the official website of the income-tax department.

Step 2: Select the option “Register yourself”.

Step 3: Choose among the many user types and click “Continue”.

Step 4: Furnish your basic details.

Step 5: Click on “Submit”.

Step 6: You will receive an activation link in your e-mail account, similar to a subscriber confirmation page you usually receive for various services. Clicking on this link will activate the account.

This concludes the registration process. Now, let us examine the process of fetching the requisite details using your account:

Step 1: Log in to your activated account.

Step 2: Go to “Profile Settings”.

Step 3: Select “My Account”.

The following PAN details you will get:

  • Name of Assessee

Note: The ‘Know your PAN’ service is discontinued on the Income Tax Department website due to security reasons for PAN card holders, as many users complained that unknown persons misuse their PAN numbers.

How to Know your PAN Number through Email?

You can use this method in case you forgot PAN card number. To initiate PAN number retrieval via email, craft a new message specifying “Request for PAN Card Number” in the subject line. Send it to either [email protected] (NSDL) or [email protected] (UTIITSL). In the body, politely request your PAN details and include your full name (matching the PAN card), date of birth (DD/MM/YYYY), and your registered phone number for verification. After reviewing for accuracy, send the email and expect a response with your PAN number within a few business days.

How to Know your PAN Number using a Toll-Free Number?

You have two options for retrieving your PAN number through a toll-free call: Dial 1800-180-1961, the Income Tax department’s helpline, or 1800-222-990, which connects you to NSDL (now Protean e-Gov Technologies Limited). Follow the interactive voice response (IVR) system’s instructions and select the option for “Know Your PAN.” Be prepared to enter your details when prompted for verification. The system will then retrieve and provide your PAN number.

Note: The mentioned number might change over time, so check it on the respective websites before dialling. 

How to Know your PAN card status online?

As mentioned previously, Know your PAN is disabled and replaced by the “Verify PAN status” service. Here are the steps to check your PAN status on the income tax website,

Step 1: Visit the Income Tax Department’s e-filing website

Step 2: Under the “Quick Links” section on the homepage, click “Verify Your PAN“.

Step 3: Enter your PAN, full name according to PAN, date of birth (in DD/MM/YYYY format), and your registered mobile number.

Step 4: Click “Continue“.

Step 5: An OTP (one-time password) will be sent to your mobile number. Enter the OTP in the designated field and click “Validate“.

The website will display a message indicating whether your PAN is valid or invalid.
