In India, road tax is a tax levied by the respective state government on individuals for the use of their vehicle on public roads. The tax imposed differs from state to state due to different tax rates set by the particular state government based on the vehicles. Road tax has to be paid by the vehicle owners at the time of registering their vehicle with Regional Transport Office. In this article, we look at the various aspects of Telangana Road Tax in detail.

Telangana Motor Vehicle Taxation Act

As per the provisions under the Telangana Motor Vehicle Taxation Act, the Transport department is responsible for the collection of road tax from vehicle owners in the state. The road tax payment is made either quarterly, half-yearly or annually. The registered owner or individual who has possession of the vehicle has to fill a form stating the particulars of the vehicle and its use in the state to the taxation authority.

Calculation of Road Tax

In Telangana, road tax is calculated based on the various factors such as the type of Vehicle (Two wheelers, Four wheelers) and purpose of usage (personal, transportation of goods). It also depends on the model, make seating capacity, engine capacity, etc. of the vehicle. The vehicle owner has to pay the tax according to the rate mentioned in the Taxation Act specified below.

Time Limit of Tax Payment

The tax levied under section 3 has to be paid at the time of registration of the vehicle under the Motor vehicle Act, 1988 in respect of old motor vehicle then the tax has to be paid in advance on or one month before from the expiry date of previous tax paid.

Tax Rate on Two Wheelers

The tax slabs for private vehicles in the state of Telangana are tabulated below:

8. Registered Vehicle more than seven years old but not more than eight years. 3% of vehicle cost
9. Registered Vehicle more than eight years old but not more than nine years. 2.5% of vehicle cost
10. Registered Vehicle more than nine years old but not more than ten years. 2% of vehicle cost
11. Registered Vehicle more than ten years old but not more than eleven years. 1.5% of vehicle cost
12. Registered Vehicle more than eleven years. 1% of vehicle cost

 Tax Rate on Four Wheelers

The road tax applicable on four-wheelers in Telangana is determined by the cost of the vehicle, which is Rs 10 lakh. The table below specifies the road tax for different vehicles based on their age and cost.

Online Payment of Telangana Road Tax

To make an online payment for road tax in the state of Telangana, follow the steps mentioned below:

Visit Official Portal

Step 1: The applicant should visit the official website of the Transport Department of Telangana state.

Tax Verification

Step 2: The applicant has to click on “Tax Verification” tab which is visible on the homepage of the portal to avail online tax payment service. And move the application to the next stage.

Tax payment

Step 3: Now, the applicant will be redirected to the next page where you need to click on “Tax payment” option from the online transactions menu.

Choose Payment Mode

Step 4: Select the tax payment mode such as quarterly, green tax from the drop-down list.

Enter the Details

Step 5: Online tax payment page will open appears on the next screen. You need to enter the details like Vehicle and owner details, Tax details and then click on “Submit” button.

Payment Gateway

Step 6: After entering the details the page will be redirected to the payment gateway.

Select Respective Bank

Step 7: Select your respective bank to make payment and then click on the “Proceed” button.

Receive Successful Message

Step 8: The successful message will be displayed if bank status is a success then transactions get approved, and fee receipt will be generated.

Receive Payment Receipt

Step 9: Now, the payment receipt will be generated on successful payment of road tax, and that can be taken a print for future use.

Penalty for Non-Payment of Tax

If a respective taxpayer fails to pay the quarterly tax within the specified time limit, the assessing authority may impose a penalty which will be equal to the double time of the rate of quarterly tax imposed.

If a respective taxpayer fails to pay the lumpsum tax within the specified time limit, the assessing authority may impose a penalty which will be equal to the double time of the rate of lumpsum tax imposed.
