Jharkhand property tax is a tax levied by the Municipal Corporation on the value of a property or real estate. Owners of properties in the state are responsible for paying property tax to the Municipal Corporation which are regulated by the Urban Development and Housing Department of Jharkhand. Importance of Property Tax
Property tax is one of the primary revenue sources for the respective Municipal Corporations. Any residential, commercial, industrial located within the limits of the Municipal Corporation are subject to levy of property tax. In Jharkhand, property tax is imposed on every financial year of the same month, and a citizen is liable is file return on the same day.
Applicability for Property Tax
The following persons are required to pay property tax:
- A person whose is above 18 years of age.
- An individual who is a permanent resident in the state of Jharkhand.
- Any person who owns a property in Jharkhand is entitled to pay a property tax.
Exemption on Property Tax
The following persons are exempt from paying Jharkhand property tax:
- The land or property owned by the Devasthan Department of the State Government.
- Any area or property maintained for public worship or civic purpose.
- Property used by an educational institution solely for purposes of education.
- Land controlled for the purposes connected with the disposal of dead bodies.
- Property for the cause of public parks public libraries or public museums.
Property Registration
Before making payment for property tax, the taxable person is responsible for registering their property by filing the application form for property registration and furnish the same application along with the required documents to the concerned authority of the Municipal Corporation.

Required Document
The applicant is required to submit the property tax invoice details at the time of making payment for property tax.
Online Payment Procedure for Property Tax
To make payment for property tax online in Jharkhand, follow the steps specified here.
Visit Official Portal
Step 1: Please visit the official portal of the Urban Development and Housing Department Government of Jharkhand.
Step 2: Click on “Self Assessment” option which is under the property or holding tax tab on the homepage of the portal.
Step 3: Now, the current page will be redirected to the next page, where you have to choose your municipal corporation from the drop-down menu and click on “Go now” button.
Self Assessment for Property
Step 4: Click on Apply Online button to get the self-assessment form.
Step 5: Press yes or no button for selection, on the alert received on existing holding details and Click on Close button to suspend the alert.
Fill the Relevant Details
Step 6: Fill the relevant details of self-assessment form, when no is selected.
Step 7: Click on the dialogue box if the correspondence address differs from property address.
Submit the Assessment
Step 8: Click on the Submit tab to submit the assessment form and proceed.
Receive Holding Details
Step 9: Now, select the desired ward no from the list of option and enter the holding number and click on Search to get the holding details and press the close button to suspend the alert.
Step 10: Click on the Select button to get the self-assessment form. Click on Close button to suspend the alert.
Step 11: Fill the relevant details of self-assessment form, when yes is selected.
Submit the Assessment Form
Step 12: Click on the dialogue box if the correspondence address differs from property address. Click on the Submit button to submit the assessment form and proceed.
Pay Property Tax
Step 13: Click on “Pay property tax” option which is under the property or holding tax tab on the same portal.
Step 14: You have to choose your municipal corporation from the drop-down menu and click on “Go now” button.
Select the Respective ward
Step 15: Select the ward and enter the holding no. or owner name. Press on the Search button to search the property.
Step 16: Click on View to get the details of the individual application.
View Property Details
Step 17: Click on View Property Details to see the applicant property details/ View Payment Details to see the applicant payment details/ Pay Property Tax to make the payment.
Step 18: You can choose either View Demand Details to see the applicant demand details or View Payment Details to see the applicant payment details.
Payment Gateway Page
Step 19: To make an online payment click on Pay Property Tax Online to pay the tax online, i.e. you are redirected to a payment gateway to pay online.
Select Respective Bank
Step 20: If you want to make payment through card enter your card details or select your respective bank if you’re going to make payment through net banking.
Step 21: Enter your login id and password of net banking and make payment for your amount displayed on the screen.
Receipt Generation
Step 22: After making payment online, the receipt will be generated for further reference, and that can be taken printout.
Penalty for Not Paying Tax
If a respective taxpayer fails to pay the tax within the specified time limit, the assessing authority may impose a penalty which will be equal to five times of the rate of property tax imposed.
