Any member registered with the E-way bill portal can generate E-Way bills. The registered user could generate the E-Way bill through various modes like the Government website, SMS and Android app. By opening up various methodologies, the Government has helped businesses and transporters access the common portal from their convenient places and mode. In this article, we look at the various ways of generating e-way bill in India.

Modes of generating an e-way bill

  • Web-Based System
  • SMS-Based Facility
  • Android App
  • Bulk Generation Facility
  • Site-to-Site Integration
  • GSP (Goods and Services Tax Suvidha Provider)

SMS – Based Facility

The web-based system is usually used to generate multiple e-way bills. However, we could use the SMS-based system to generate a single e-way bill. A set of SMS codes are used to generate or cancel a generated e-way bill. This system must be used very precautiously as there must not be any mistakes in entering the information. The tax-payer has to record the mobile number through which he wants to generate the e-way bill on the e-way bill system. The following is the manual for generating E-way bill using SMS.

Android App

The taxpayers must register the EMEI numbers of their mobiles to generate the e-way bill on the e-way bill system. User manual available on the common portal can also be referred. The mobile application is available only for tax-payers and enrolled transporters. To generate the bill, the user has to log in and select the “for mobile app” under the registration menu. The system requests to select the user/sub-user, followed by which the IMEI number of the user must be entered. Once it is entered, the concerned user receives the link on his registered mobile to download the app via SMS. The user could now download and install the application.

Bulk Generation Facility

Any taxpayer can utilize the bulk generation facility available in the common portal. All the taxpayers can implement this facility as soon as they automate their invoice generation system. Bulk requests could be prepared for an e-way bill with the help of a file from their automated system, and upload them into the portal generating multiple e-way bills avoiding data entry errors.

One must formulate the e-way bill requests through JSON file to use the bulk generation facility. A taxpayer or transporter should organize the same from their automated system. If he is inept at doing so; he could just copy it on to the e-way bill requests, by retaining the format. This tool facilitates to authenticate and produce the JSON file.

API Integration

The taxpayer must register the server details of his/her systems through which an e-way bill is generated, it is processed with the help of APIs of the e-way bill system. An API interface is a Site-to-Site integration of the taxpayer’s website with the EWB system. This integration helps to generate the e-way bill directly from the taxpayer’s own IT solutions. The whole operation is automated without human intervention resulting in reduced data entry errors.

In a nutshell, it helps to manage manpower and cost of the operation thereby saving time and eliminating human errors.

All large taxpayers, who produce more than 200 invoices on a daily basis and registered with GST could utilize the API interface. To use the API interface, the registered taxpayer shall satisfy the following conditions to integrate the systems:

  • All the invoicing system should remain as automated and linked with IT solutions.
  • The systems at the workplace should posses enough provision to upgrade the IT solutions to integrate it with the EWB systems, in compliance with API guidelines.
  • Should be producing at least 1000 invoices per day.
  • The system must have SSL based domain name and a static IP address.
  • It must have a pre-generation system to test the API interface.
