GST Registration Update: Biometric Authentication Now Possible in Home State!

The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has announced a significant update to the GST registration process, effective March 3, 2025. Promoters and directors of companies can now complete their biometric authentication at any GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK) within their home state, eliminating the previous requirement to visit a GSK in the state where the company is being registered.

What is Changing? GST Biometric Authentication Now Available in Home States

New applicants for GST registration must complete Aadhaar authentication, which can be done either through OTP verification or Biometric Authentication at a GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK). Earlier, those selected for Biometric Authentication had to travel to the state where their business was being registered to complete the process at a designated GSK.

However, from March 3, 2025, GSTN has made this easier by allowing applicants to complete biometric authentication in their home state. 

For example, if a company is being registered in Delhi but the applicant is from Tamil Nadu, they no longer need to travel to Delhi. They can now complete the authentication process in Tamil Nadu itself, eliminating the need for interstate travel.

Eligibility Criteria for Home-State Biometric Authentication

This facility is available to individuals listed under the Promoter/Partner tab in the GST registration application for the following types of business entities:

• Public Limited Company
• Private Limited Company
• Unlimited Company
• Foreign Company

Promoters and directors of these entities can choose any GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK) within their home state, as mentioned in their GST registration application (REG-01), to complete the biometric authentication process.

GSTN has provided clear guidelines regarding how this new facility will work. Here are the key points to understand the process:

Selection and Notification Process

• Intimation Email: If a new GST registration application is selected for Biometric Authentication, the applicant will receive an email with details to select a GSK in their home state.
• Following Instructions: The applicant must follow the instructions in the email and choose a suitable GSK within their home state.
• One-Time Selection: The choice of a Home-State GSK is final and cannot be changed, so applicants should select carefully.
• Availability: This facility is currently active in 33 States/UTs, with Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Sikkim to be added soon. Applicants from other states can already opt for a Home-State GSK.

Booking and Confirmation Process

• Confirmation Email: Once a Home-State GSK is selected, the applicant will receive a confirmation email with a new slot booking link.
• Slot Booking: The Promoter/Director can book a convenient time slot using the link, subject to availability at the chosen GSK.
• Biometric Authentication Process
• Photo and Biometric Capture: The photo capture and Biometric Authentication will be completed at the chosen GSK in the applicant’s home state.
• No Repetition Required: If the biometric authentication has already been completed, the applicant does not need to repeat the process.

Special Conditions for Primary Authorized Signatory (PAS)

• Exception for PAS: If the Promoter/Director is also the Primary Authorized Signatory (PAS), they must visit the designated jurisdictional GSK for document verification. In this case, the Home-State GSK option will not be available.
• Recommended Process Order: It is advisable that the Promoter/Director completes Biometric Authentication first, before the PAS visits the GSK.

Note: Using a Home-State GSK is not mandatory. Promoters/Directors can still visit their designated jurisdictional GSK if they prefer.
