In a land of diverse culture like India, inter-caste marriage is still an issue of significant concern. The State of Andhra Pradesh, with an aim to make the state a secular place to live in, launched Chandranna Pelli Kanuka Scheme in April 2018. This initiative of the State Government intends to promote inter-caste marriage by providing financial aid to the brides of different caste.
Andhra Pradesh has proposed various schemes under different social classes. Chandranna Pelli Kanuka Scheme has explicitly been implemented for the welfare of the brides belonging to the backward classes and below the poverty line. An organisation called Kalyana Mitra tracks the application process and incentive payable to the brides.
Aspects of Chandranna Pelli Kanuka
Economic support is extended to the brides under the reservations of Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe, Backward Class. The details of the financial assistance provided are as follows.
Schedule Caste/Schedule Tribe
Bride and bridegroom belonging to the Schedule Caste are eligible for a subsidy of Rs.40,000 which is also applicable for the bride and bridegroom belonging to the Scheduled Tribe community.
On the other hand, if the bride is of an SC/ST community and the bridegroom belonging to a community other than the bride’s, an amount of Rs.75,000 is paid to the couple by the Government.
Backward Class
If both bride and bridegroom adhere to the same community of backward class, then the couple is assisted with Rs.30,000.
For a bride belonging to backward class and bridegroom belonging to a different community, financial assistance of Rs.75,000 is rendered.
Physically Challenged
If either of the couples is physically challenged, Rs.1,00,000 is disbursed by the Government to the couple.
Eligibility Criteria for Chandranna Pelli Kanuka Scheme
Girls applying for this scheme should confirm the following eligibility criteria.
- The girl should be a resident of Andhra Pradesh.
- The bride should belong to SC / ST or backward class.
- The bride should have attained the age limit of 18 or above 18 years at the time of marriage.
- The groom should be 21 years of age at the time of marriage.
- The marriage of the girl belonging to the BPL class should be on or after 01.01.2018
- The bride’s parents should possess Below Poverty category certificate or white ration card.
- This scheme is not applicable for the divorcees.
Note: This scheme does not restrict applicants based on their educational qualification where the uneducated can also apply for this scheme.
Documents Required:
- Birth certificate or SSC certificate mentioning the date of birth (if passed X) of bride and groom
- Caste/community certificate of bride and groom
- Nativity certificate
- AADHAR card of bride and groom
- Income certificate of both the families not earlier than 6 months from the date of marriage.
- Wedding card
- Passport size photos of bride and bridegroom
- Copy of bank passbook
- White ration card/BPL certificate
- In case of disabled applicants, SADAREM certificate or disability certificate issued by Meeseva is required to be submitted.
Note: Meeseva issues a certificate called as ‘Integrated Certificate’ (nativity, caste/community, birth certificate) which is also accepted.
Applying for Chandranna Pelli Kanuka Scheme:
The applicants can enrol for this scheme through the following modes. The registration service is available only in Meeseva centres or Samakhya Office. The applicants are supposed to register 15 days prior to their marriage to avail this scheme.
Online Application Procedure:
The eligible applicants can avail this scheme by making an online application. Follow the steps given below to apply online.
Step 1: The applicants registered in Meeseva should first visit the official portal of ‘Chandranna Pelli Kanuka’.
Step 2: Then the candidate should log in to the home page and must select the option of either bride or groom.
Step 3: Enter the Aadhar number and click Send OTP for which an OTP will be sent.
Step 4: On entering the OTP in the given space and clicking Submit, an online application form will appear.
Step 5: Furnish essential details and verify before submitting the application form.
Step 6: On submission, the reference number should be noted for checking the application status later.
Chandranna Pelli Kanuka App
As an initiative of Andhra Pradesh Government, an application (App) for Chandranna Pelli Kanuka scheme has been developed which is available in Google Play Store. The smartphone using applicants can download, install it and fill the application form by entering the Aadhar number. A facility of Loggin in with face detection is also available. The remaining procedure for applying is the same as the online application process.
Offline Mode of Application:
The applicants can apply offline by visiting the nearest Meeseva centres to apply offline and submit the necessary documents. Apart from this, applicants eligible can make a call to 1100. Residents of tribal areas can visit the nearest Mandal Samakhya Office for registration.
Note: The bride or family will be given only 20 per cent of the amount before marriage, and the balance 80 per cent is disbursed post-marriage.
