How to Get ESI Registration in India?
The Employees State Insurance (ESI) scheme is a crucial payroll compliance initiative under the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) in India. Enacted by the Government of India, it aims to provide monetary, medical, and other benefits to employees. According to the ESIC Act, ESI registration is mandatory for any company with more than 10 employees, or 20 employees in some states.
Employees earning more than Rs.21,000 per month, including basic salary and dearness allowances, must contribute to the ESI scheme. The initiative protects employees against financial disruptions due to sickness, disablement, or death arising from employment-related injuries.
Features of the ESIC Scheme
- Comprehensive medical care is available for registered employees during incapacity and health restoration.
- Financial assistance is provided during absenteeism caused by illness, maternity, or accidents, compensating for lost wages.
- The scheme includes medical benefits for employees and their family members, categorized into Cash and Non-Cash Benefits.
- Cash Benefits encompass sickness, maternity, disablement, funeral expenses, rehabilitation allowance, and vocational rehabilitation.
- Non-cash benefits ensure that both employer and employee contribute a fixed percentage monthly to the ESI fund. Employees contribute 0.75% and employers contribute 3.25% of the wages.
- Employers must deduct the employee's contribution from the wages and deposit it with the ESIC within 15 days of the calendar month end.
Entities covered by the ESIC Act of 1948 include shops, cinemas, medical institutions, hotels, newspaper establishments, educational institutions, and more, provided they meet the required employee number criteria in their state.
