All aluminium products and articles made of aluminium are classified under Chapter 76 of the Harmonised System of Nomenclature (HSN).
12% GST Rate for Aluminium and Aluminium Products
The following types of aluminium products attract 12% GST in India:
- Aluminium utensils
- Table, kitchen or other household articles of aluminium
(Household and kitchen use items remain in the 12% slab to make essential products affordable.)
18% GST Rate for Aluminium and Aluminium Products
The following types of aluminium products attract 18% GST as per the latest updates:
- Aluminium alloys such as ingots, billets, wire-bars, wire-rods
- Aluminium waste and scrap
- Aluminium powders and flakes
- Rod, profiles and aluminium bars
- Aluminium wire
- Aluminium plates, sheets and strip, of a thickness exceeding 0.2 mm
- Pipes and aluminium tubes
- Aluminium tube or pipe fittings (for example, couplings, elbows, sleeves)
- Aluminium structures (excluding prefabricated buildings) and parts of structures such as:
- Bridges and bridge sections
- Towers and lattice masts
- Roofs and roofing frameworks
- Balustrades, pillars and columns
- Rods, aluminium plates, profiles, tubes and similar products prepared for use in structures
- Tanks, aluminium reservoirs, vats and similar containers (for any material other than compressed or liquefied gas) of a capacity exceeding 300 litres, whether or not lined or heat-insulated, but not fitted with mechanical or thermal equipment
- Aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and other containers
- Aluminium containers for compressed or liquefied gas
- Stranded wires and cables
- Other articles of aluminium, such as:
- Nails, tacks, staples, screws, bolts, nuts, screw hooks, rivets, cotters, cotter pins, washers and similar articles
- Cloth, grill, netting and fencing of aluminium wire
28% GST Rate β No Longer Applicable
Earlier, the following items attracted 28% GST:
- Aluminium foil (β€0.2 mm thickness)
- Aluminium doors, windows and their frames and thresholds for doors
- Sanitary ware and parts other than utensils
These items have now been moved to the 18% slab. The GST Council removed the 28% rate for aluminium products to boost industrial use and reduce costs.
