FSSAI License Renewal in India

For food businesses in India, obtaining and timely renewing an FSSAI License or Registration is essential to ensure legal compliance, food safety, and uninterrupted operations. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) mandates that every Food Business Operator (FBO) must hold a valid license or registration at all times.

Since FSSAI licenses are issued for a limited validity period, renewal is critical to avoid penalties, suspension, or cancellation of business operations.

IndiaFilings provides end-to-end assistance for FSSAI License and Registration renewal, ensuring a smooth, error-free, and compliant process for your food business.

FSSAI License & Registration for Food Businesses in India

Any business involved in the manufacture, processing, storage, transportation, distribution, or sale of food products must obtain FSSAI authorization.

Based on the scale, turnover, and nature of operations, FSSAI authorization is categorised into:

  • FSSAI Registration
  • FSSAI State License
  • FSSAI Central License

Each Food Business Operator (FBO) is allotted a 14-digit FSSAI number, which must be displayed on food packages, invoices, and business premises.

FSSAI Registration (For Small Food Businesses)

FSSAI Registration is mandatory for small-scale food businesses.

Eligibility

  • Annual turnover: Less than ₹12 lakhs
  • Applies to:
    • Small manufacturers
    • Retailers
    • Hawkers
    • Petty food businesses

This registration allows small FBOs to operate legally while complying with basic food safety standards.

FSSAI License (For Medium & Large Food Businesses)

FSSAI License is required when the annual turnover exceeds ₹12 lakhs or when the business is engaged in food processing or manufacturing.

Types of FSSAI Licenses

🔹 State FSSAI License

  • For medium-sized food businesses
  • Turnover: ₹12 lakhs to ₹20 crores
  • Valid for businesses operating within one state

🔹 Central FSSAI License

  • For large food businesses
  • Turnover: Above ₹20 crores
  • Mandatory for:
    • Importers & exporters
    • E-commerce food operators
    • Businesses operating in multiple states
