Delhi Marriage Certificate – Procedure and Charges

The marriage certificate is a legal document evidencing marriage that has taken place between a bride and a groom. A marriage certificate can prove to be useful while applying for many other government documents after marriage like PAN, Passport, and Visa. In this article, we look at the procedure for a marriage certificate in Delhi and the documents required and charges. 

Requirement

  • The Groom must be 21 years of age
  • The Bride must be 18 years of age
  • Documents as listed below
  • Affidavits
  • Two witnesses (Three in case of marriage through the Special Marriage Act)

Documents Required

If Aadhaar card or acknowledgement receipt is unavailable for any of the Bride, Groom or witness, the marriage certificate application may not be accepted. So it is advisable to apply for the Aadhaar card before Marriage registration.

The couple would need the following documents to obtain a marriage certificate in Delhi.

Marriage Certificate Affidavit in Delhi

In addition to the above documents, an affidavit must be executed by the Bride and Groom in the following format.

Procedure for Applying for Marriage Certificate

  • Once all the documents or photographs are ready, you will have to make an appointment.
  • This appointment can be made online or by visiting the court in the relevant area.

Applying for Appointment Online

  • Go to http://edistrict.delhigovt.nic.in/
  • Online click ‘Make Appointment with DM’ and register
  • Select your District and continue
  • Fill in the husband’s details and select ‘Registration of Marriage Certificate’.
  • Fill in the Marriage Certificate form and select the date of appointment.
  • Click on ‘Submit Application’
  • You would then obtain an acknowledgement page with the details of your appointment and instructions
  • There will be a link to a fully filled form on that web page.
  • Take a printout of the Acknowledgement

Free for Marriage Registration Certificate

The fee for a marriage registration certificate in Delhi is as follows:

  • Rs. 100 in the event of Hindu Marriage Act
  • Rs.150 in the event of Special Marriage Act

The fees are to be deposited with the cashier of the District, and the receipt must be attached with the application form.

Marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act

In case of an application for a marriage certificate under the Hindu Marriage Act, verification of all the documents related to both the parties is carried out on the date of application and a certain day is fixed for registration. On the day, of registration, both parties together with witnesses who attended their marriage, should be present to complete the formalities.

Marriage under the Special Marriage Act

Both parties – Groom & Bride need to be present after submission of documents for the issuance of a public notice, thereby inviting objections. Also, one copy of the wedding notice would be displayed on the notice board of the office, and a copy of the notice would be sent by registered post to both parties, i.e. the Groom & Bride, to the address given by them.

In case of no objections, registration is conducted thirty days after the notice date. Both parties and three witnesses are required to be present on the registration date.

Marriage Registration – Witness Requirement

Marriage certificate applicants are required to take a witness along with them.  A Witness can be anyone who is the holder of an Aadhaar card or PAN card or other acceptable proof as per the list of documents above. The witness should preferably not be an immediate blood relative and should have attended the marriage.
