Changing TAN Data
TAN or TAN registration is significant for businesses deducting tax at source and is required to be quoted in TDS/TCS return, TDS/TCS payment challan and TDS/TCS certificates. TAN is allotted to those who are required by law to deduct tax at source or TDS. Also, the MCA now issues all company registration certificate with TAN automatically allocated. A person or entity to whom the TAN has been allotted is allowed to change or make corrections in the details associated with the TAN database.
TAN is allotted by the Income Tax Department by the application submitted to TIN facilitation centres managed by NSDL. NSDL will intimate the TAN which has to be mentioned in all future correspondence relating to TDS/TCS. In this article, we look at the procedure for changing TAN data.
Documents Required
While applying for changing TAN data, applicants are required to submit the below documents:
- TAN Change Request Form
- Proof of TAN
- Duly signed Acknowledgement Slip
Note: The application will be processed only on receipt of duly signed acknowledgement and realisation of payment. The application form has to be submitted within 15 days from the date of online application.
Fee for TAN Data Change
An application fee of Rs. 65 (including GST) plus service charges applicable are charged to carry out the changes in TAN. In case the application has mistakes and is rejected, the fee is non-refundable.
Online Procedure for TAN Change Request
In case of the new TAN change/corrections request, the user will have to submit a ‘Form for Changes/Correction in TAN data for TAN allotted’ (TAN Change Request Form) from the Income-tax Department’s official website. To raise a request for TAN data change, please follow the below steps:
Visit e-Gov-TIN portal
Step 1: The user must visit the official NSDL e-Gov-TIN portal.

Step 2: It takes to the new page where the user clicks on the ‘Online Application for Changes/Corrections in TAN data for TAN allotted link to apply for TAN change request.
Step 3: The online TAN Change Request Form will be displayed on the screen as shown below:

Fill in the right credentials
Step 4: Fill all the mandatory details in the form and make the required corrections on the appropriate field.
Step 5: If the TAN details submitted get fails in any format level validation, a notification will be sent indicating the errors displayed on the screen. The form needs to be re-submitted after rectifying all the mistakes.
Step 6: After filling all the details, the application form can be submitted by clicking on the submit button. If all the details are correct the confirmation message will be sent with the option to amend any information provided.
Payment Process
Step 7: Then it will be moved to the payment section where the requested payment has to be made.
The payment can be made either by the below following:
- Demand draft (DD)
- Cheque
- Credit card/debit card
- Net banking.
Generate Acknowledgement Slip
Step 9: Once the payment is made (in case the mode of payment is other than DD or Cheque) then an acknowledgement slip with a 14 digit number for reference will be displayed. Save and print the acknowledgement slip for the future reference.
Step 10: The acknowledgement slip along with the requisite documents has to be submitted to NSDL at NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited.
Track/Check Status of TAN
The user may track/check the status of their TAN application using the unique Acknowledgment Number after three days of the request. The TAN application status can also be followed by sending an SMS – NSDLTAN to 57575.
