BIS Raids eCommerce Platforms for Selling Non-Certified Products

The Indian government has taken strict action against Amazon, Flipkart, and other e-commerce platforms for selling products without mandatory BIS certification. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted surprise raids on their warehouses, seizing thousands of items that fail to meet safety standards.

What Happened?

During its surveillance, BIS identified that several non-certified products were being sold on e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, Myntra, and BigBasket, even though BIS certification has been made mandatory for these products. As a result, on March 7, 2025, BIS officials raided an Amazon warehouse in Lucknow, confiscating toys and kitchen appliances that lacked the mandatory BIS certification. A previous raid in February at an Amazon warehouse in Gurugram led to the seizure of:

  • 58 aluminium foils
  • 34 metallic water bottles
  • 25 toys
  • 20 hand blenders
  • 7 PVC cables
  • 2 food mixers
  • 1 speaker

At Flipkart’s warehouse in Gurugram, BIS seized:

  • 534 stainless steel bottles
  • 134 toys
  • 41 speakers

Further investigation revealed that many of these unsafe products were linked to Techvision International Pvt Ltd, a supplier distributing non-certified products. BIS raids on Techvision’s Delhi warehouses uncovered:

  • 7,000 electric water heaters
  • 4,000 electric food mixers
  • 95 electric room heaters
  • 40 gas stoves

These items were from popular brands like Digismart, Activa, Inalsa, Cello Swift, and Butterfly—all lacking BIS certification.

BIS Expands Raids to Delhi and Tamil Nadu

Following earlier crackdowns, BIS conducted another round of raids in Delhi and Tamil Nadu.

More Non-Certified Products Seized by BIS in Delhi

In a significant 15-hour operation, BIS officials raided Amazon Sellers Pvt Ltd’s warehouse in Delhi’s Mohan Cooperative Industrial Area, seizing over 3,500 items, including geysers, food mixers, and electrical appliances worth approximately Rs 70 lakh. Many of these products either lacked the mandatory ISI mark or had counterfeit ISI labels.

Simultaneously, BIS officials raided Instakart Services Pvt Ltd, a Flipkart subsidiary, in Trinagar, Delhi. They confiscated 590 pairs of substandard sports shoes, valued at Rs 6 lakh, for failing to meet BIS standards.

BIS Cracks Down on Amazon and Flipkart Again in Tamilnadu

In Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district, BIS raided Amazon’s Puduvoyal warehouse, seizing 3,376 non-certified items such as insulated flasks, food containers, metallic water bottles, ceiling fans, and toys worth Rs 36 lakh.

Another raid at Flipkart’s Koduvalli warehouse led to the confiscation of uncertified baby diapers, casseroles, stainless steel water bottles, and insulated steel bottles.

Legal Action & Penalties

The BIS Act, 2016 mandates that certain consumer goods must have BIS certification to ensure safety and quality. Violators face penalties starting at ₹2 lakh and can even face imprisonment of up to 2 years. BIS has already filed legal cases against Techvision International, and more cases are expected in the coming days.

Key Takeaway for E-Commerce Sellers & Buyers

  • Sellers: If you sell products online, make sure they are BIS-certified to avoid legal trouble. Non-compliant items may be seized, and your business could face penalties.
  • Buyers: Before purchasing, check for the ISI mark or verify the certification using the BIS Care App to ensure product safety.

What is BIS Certification & Why is it Important?

BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) Certification is an official approval from the Indian government that ensures a product meets strict safety, quality, and performance standards. Products that require BIS certification must undergo rigorous testing to ensure they are safe for consumers and comply with government regulations.

Certified products carry the ISI mark (Indian Standards Institute), which guarantees their quality and reliability. Here’s why BIS certification is essential:

  • Ensures Safety – Reduces risks like electric shocks, fire hazards, and product failures.
  • Guarantees Quality – Certified products last longer and function better.
  • Mandatory for Many Products – Selling non-certified products is illegal in India.
  • Protects Consumers – Helps buyers choose safe and reliable products.
  • Boosts Business Credibility – Builds trust and strengthens brand reputation.
  • Supports Global Trade – BIS-certified products are internationally recognized, making exports easier.
