Form DIR-6 (MCA): Intimation of Change in Particulars of a Director

Form DIR-6 is the e-Form prescribed by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) for a Director to intimate any change in the particulars previously furnished while obtaining the Director Identification Number (DIN). Every Director or Designated Partner holding an approved DIN/DPIN is required to file Form DIR-6 with MCA within 30 days of any such change in particulars, in accordance with Rule 12(1) of the Companies (Appointment and Qualification of Directors) Rules, 2014.

In this article, we look at the applicability, documents required, and step-by-step procedure for filing Form DIR-6 on the MCA portal.

What is Form DIR-6?

Form DIR-6 is an electronic form filed on the MCA portal to update the personal details of a Director linked to their DIN. The DIN is a unique identification number allotted by the Central Government to every individual who is, or intends to become, a Director of a company or a Designated Partner of a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP).

Once a DIN is allotted through Form DIR-3 (or as part of SPICe+ during incorporation), the details captured become part of the MCA database. Any subsequent change — whether in name, address, contact details, or identity proof — must be reported to MCA through Form DIR-6 to keep the DIN records accurate and up to date.

Legal Provisions Governing Form DIR-6

The filing of Form DIR-6 is governed by:

  • Section 153 and Section 154 of the Companies Act, 2013
  • Rule 12(1) of the Companies (Appointment and Qualification of Directors) Rules, 2014

Under these provisions, every Director or Designated Partner is statutorily obligated to intimate the Central Government of any change in their particulars within 30 days of such change.

When is Form DIR-6 Required to be Filed?

A Director must file Form DIR-6 with MCA whenever there is a change in any of the following particulars previously submitted in Form DIR-3 or SPICe+:

  • Name of the Director (for example, change of surname after marriage)
  • Father's name
  • Date of birth (correction)
  • Gender
  • Nationality or citizenship
  • Residential address (present or permanent)
  • Email ID and mobile number
  • Identity proof details – PAN, Passport, Aadhaar, or Voter ID
  • Educational qualification or occupation

Documents Required for Filing Form DIR-6

The documents to be attached with Form DIR-6 depend on the nature of the change. However, the following documents are mandatory in most cases:

1. Identity Proof

  • Indian nationals: PAN card (mandatory in all cases, even if PAN is unchanged)
  • Foreign nationals: Passport (mandatory)

2. Address Proof

Any one of the following documents may be submitted as proof of residence:

  • Bank statement
  • Electricity bill
  • Telephone bill
  • Utility bill
  • Aadhaar card

The address proof must not be older than 2 months for Indian Directors and not older than 1 year for foreign Directors as on the date of filing Form DIR-6.

3. Verification – Form DIR-7

A self-attested verification by the Director in Form DIR-7 is mandatory.

4. Other Supporting Documents

  • Gazette notification (where required)
  • Translated copies of any document not in Hindi or English, certified by a professional translator

Procedure for Filing Form DIR-6 on the MCA Portal

The filing of Form DIR-6 is fully online through the MCA V3 portal. The step-by-step procedure is as follows:

Step 1: Login to the MCA Portal

Visit the MCA portal at www.mca.gov.in and log in using your Business User credentials.

Step 2: Access Form DIR-6

Navigate to MCA Services → Company e-Filing → DIN Related Filings → Form DIR-6 – Change in Particulars of Director.

Step 3: Enter the DIN

Enter the DIN of the Director. The existing details will be auto-populated from the MCA database.

Step 4: Update the Changed Particulars

Select the type of change and update the relevant fields. Ensure all entries match the supporting documents exactly, including spelling.

Step 5: Attach Supporting Documents

Upload scanned copies of the identity proof, address proof, Form DIR-7 verification, and any other supporting attachments.

Step 6: Affix Digital Signatures

Form DIR-6 must be:

  • Digitally signed by the Director whose details are being changed, and
  • Certified by a practising professional – a Chartered Accountant, Company Secretary, or Cost Accountant – along with their membership number.

Step 7: Submit the Form and Pay Fees

Submit the form on the MCA portal and pay the prescribed filing fee. An SRN (Service Request Number) is generated, which can be used to track the status of the application.

Processing of Form DIR-6 by MCA

After submission, Form DIR-6 is processed by MCA in either of the following modes:

  • Straight Through Processing (STP): If no potential duplicate is identified and the details match the PAN database, the form is auto-approved by the system.
  • Non-STP / DIN Cell Verification: If the system flags a potential duplicate or mismatch, the form is forwarded to the DIN Cell for manual verification. In such cases, the applicant may resubmit the form only once.

On approval, MCA updates the DIN database and intimates the Director by email confirming the change.

Penalty for Non-Filing of Form DIR-6

Failure to file Form DIR-6 within 30 days of any change in particulars is a non-compliance under the Companies Act, 2013. While DIR-6 itself is filed without an additional late fee in most circumstances, continued mismatch between MCA and PAN/identity records can lead to:

  • Deactivation of DIN
  • Rejection of subsequent ROC filings
  • Issues during DIR-3 KYC compliance
  • Possible action under Section 159 of the Companies Act, 2013
