Nativity certificate is a document issued by the various State Governments which certifies the jurisdictional origin of a person and his/her family members. In other words, the document certifies that the concerned individual and the respective family members resided in a particular state from the birth of the individual. In this article, we look at the procedure for obtaining the Punjab nativity certificate.
Residence Certificate vs. Nativity Certificate
It may sound similar, but these documents vary in nature. Residence or Domicile certificate will prove a person’s place of residence, whereas a nativity certificate certifies the birthplace of a person and the place where his/her family resided then.
Purpose of the Document
The document serves the following purposes:
- It is handy while seeking admissions in educational institutions as the document certifies the identity of the prospective student. Moreover, it is required to utilize the reservation accorded to a particular individual under state/NRI quota.
- It is necessary for obtaining scholarship schemes.
- It is essential to apply for jobs abroad.
- It is mandatory to apply for jobs in government firms.
- It makes the regulations concerning passport application and bank loans easier.
Eligibility
Any individual residing in the State of Punjab for a minimum period of 5 years can obtain the nativity certificate.
Documents Required
One must furnish the following documents to obtain a nativity certificate:
- Birth certificate
- School leaving certificate
- School leaving certificate of the parents
- Ration card
- Details of immovable properties possessed by the parent in a particular state
- Proof of residence
- Proof of address
- Aadhar Card
Application Procedure
To obtain nativity certificate in Punjab, follow the below procedure:
Step 1:- District Magistrate
Visit the office of the district magistrate of your respective birthplace.
Step 2:- Application Form
Obtain the application form from the concerned authorities.
Step 3:- Fill it up
Enter the essential details in the application form.
Step 4:- Submit the application
Submit the application to the authority concerned along with the essential documents.
Provisions for OCI/IPO
A nativity certificate is needed for an NRI to obtain the status of Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) or People of Indian Origin (PIO). For their cause to be considered, such residents are required to provide substantial proof of their residence in India. Akin to the provisions for other residents, the nativity certificate for people of such category will be issued by the respective District Collector/District Magistrate.
NRI’s of such kind are vested with the option of furnishing their Baptism Certificates issued by the church authorities in place of the birth certificate, provided that the same is attested by the district collector or magistrate.

Nativity certificate obtained for the above purpose should be attested by the Ministry of External Affairs. The application and documents for the same must be addressed to any of the outsourced agencies nominated for this purpose. A few of such agencies are “BLS International Services LTD,” “IVS Global Services Pvt. Ltd,” “VFS Global Attestation Centre, etc.
Note: – Applicants must be wary of unauthorized person/touts who claim their expertise in these services.
Processing Time and Validity
The certificate is issued within a span of 1-2 weeks. Once the document is obtained, it is valid for a lifetime.
