In India, road tax is a tax levied by the respective state government on individuals for the use of their vehicle on public roads. The tax imposed differs from state to state due to different tax rates set by the particular state government based on the vehicles. Road tax has to be paid by the vehicle owners at the time of registering their vehicle with Regional Transport Office. In this article, we have a look at the various aspects of Chhattisgarh Road Tax in detail.

Chhattisgarh Motoryan Karadhan Rules,1991

As per the provisions under the Chhattisgarh Motoryan Karadhan Rules, 1991 the transport department is responsible for the collection of road tax from vehicle owners in the state. The road tax payment is made either monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or annually. The registered owner or individual who has possession of the vehicle has to fill a form stating the particulars of the vehicle and its use in the state to the taxation authority.

Calculation of Road Tax

In Chhattisgarh, road tax is calculated based on the various factors such as the type of Vehicle (Two wheelers, Four wheelers) and purpose of usage (personal, transportation of goods). It also depends on the model, make seating capacity, engine capacity, etc. of the vehicle. The vehicle owner has to pay the tax according to the rate mentioned in the tax rules specified below.

Time Limit of Tax Payment

The tax levied under Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 has to be paid at the time of registration of the vehicle in respect of an old motor vehicle if the fee(tax) payable for the lifetime of the vehicle has to be paid in advance on or on before from the expiry date of previous tax paid.

If the tax payable for quarterly has to be paid within fifteen days from the commencement of the quarterly.

If the tax payable for monthly has to be paid within ten days from the commencement of the month.

Road Tax on Four Wheelers

Online Payment of Chhattisgarh Road Tax

To make an online payment for tax in the state of Chhattisgarh, follow the steps mentioned below.

Visit Official Portal

Step 1: The applicant should visit the official website of the Transport Department of Chhattisgarh state.

Online tax or fees payment system

Step 2: You need to click on Online tax or fees payment system option which is present on the home screen of the portal.

Login into the Portal

Step 3: On the next page, the user login page will appear to login into the portal.

Provide Login Details

Step 4: If you are an existing applicant, provide your login details such as login id and password and then click on “Log in” button.

New User Registration

Step 5: If you are a new user, click on “New user click here” tab to register as the new user into the portal.

Tax User Creation

Step 6: Then the tax user creation page will appear on the next screen.

Fill the Details

Step 7: The applicant needs to fill the necessary information such as

  • Username
  • Login id
  • Email id
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Registered RTO details
  • Bank details

After filling with the required details, the applicant has to click on the “Save” button to save your information.

Enter the Login Credentials

Step 8: You will be redirected to the login page, enter the login credentials to proceed for the road tax payment.

Select Payment Mode

Step 9: Select Pay tax quarterly, monthly from the payment option drop-down list.

Enter Tax payment vehicle number

Step 10: The applicant needs to choose the register number and enter your desired tax payment vehicle number and then click on the ‘Submit’ button.

Make Payment

Step 11: Now verify your tax details as shown below and make payment by choosing the preferred bank and click on the “Make Payment” button.

Receive Successful Message

Step 12: The successful message will be displayed if bank status is a success then transactions get approved, and fee receipt will be generated.

Receive Payment Receipt

Step 13: Now, the payment receipt will be generated on successful payment of road tax, and that can be taken a print for future use.

Penalty for Non-Payment of Tax

If a respective taxpayer fails to pay the quarterly tax within the specified time limit, the assessing authority may impose a penalty of the prescribed amount with interest instantly.

Refund of Tax Paid

The refund of any excess tax paid can be claimed by requesting a refund in the application form (Form-Q) to the taxation authority with the required documents. The taxation authority after verification with the particulars submitted will issue a refund voucher in the form-R to the taxable person.
